EP 133 Lesson Ideas for Testing Week

You are an effective and hard-working educator. The work that you are doing for your students is appreciated. Thank you for your dedication and the time you put in to ensure your students succeed.
In this week’s episode, I will share lesson ideas that you can use during those days and weeks that you are testing.
Build a vocabulary book. In the vocabulary book, students can build a story around key vocabulary they have learned for the year. Students can add pictures from old magazines and newspapers. There is also a lot of free clip art to add to students’ vocabulary books.
Write a letter to new students. Testing can be draining to students and sometimes they need a brain break. This will be a perfect opportunity for your students to write a letter to the up-and-coming students. Before having students write the letter, draft a checklist of what you would like to be included in the letter. Also, take time to model for the students how to write the letter.
Compare and contrast two holidays or celebrations. This is an engaging activity that all students can participate in regardless of their levels. For this lesson, students start with building background knowledge about the topics. For example, I might choose to compare and contrast Ramadan and Eid. I will then do some basic research about those two holidays. This can be done through reading and listening to books and videos about the topics. Have a lesson where you explain, model, and practice how to compare and contrast two topics. Then have the students pick two holidays/celebrations they want to compare and contrast. After they build background knowledge and research the topics, students will compare and contrast with a Venn Diagram. Once the students compare and contrast, they can write about the similarities and differences of the holidays. You can also have the students use visuals to assist them in comparing and contrasting.
