Let’s Start This Class Off Right

Setting the tone of your classroom is something that every teacher should make a priority. In this blog post I will provide you with examples from my classroom on how I set a positive tone with my students.

When the students enter the classroom I have them sign in. The students feel as if they are going to work. I also love that it creates independence. You can even link an incentive to the sign-in process. For example, if my students sign-in on time everyday they get points they can cash-in for rewards. You can also use these sign-in sheets to show parents/guardians when the students are getting into class.

After the students “clock-in”, the students log their emotions for the day. This is great for ELLs because you can have emojis or simple faces. This has also helped me immediately know when I need to address any social-emotional issues in the classroom. In secondary you will be amazed at what can happen in those 3 minutes of transition to classes. You can print out the Feelings Wheel and use it in your classroom. Feel free to adjust how it is used for the needs of your ELLs.

The students then pick up the materials for the day. This prevents you from having to say throughout the day what they need. This will allow the students to start the class prepared and focused. After picking up their materials, the students then start on their warm-up activity.

While the students are working on their bellwork, it allows me time to complete adminstrative tasks, check homework, and have quick meetings with the students.
