Thank you so much for stopping by to view this product. This graphic organizer has proved to be very helpful in my classroom. Below are instructions on how I use it in my classroom. I would highly suggest modeling for the students how to use the graphic organizer.
HOW TO USE:
-
Have the students write the prompt on the top under the Quick Write Prompt.
-
Have students generate their focus statement (topic sentence) for the paragraph. Students then write it in the focus statement box.
-
Students then need to identify their first piece of evidence from the text. Once the evidence is identified, the students write it in the “Evidence 1” box. For students that are struggling or need an extra push have them use the “Citing Evidence Frames”.
-
After writing the evidence using the “Citing Evidence Frames”, have the students analyze what the evidence means. This can be difficult for some students, so have them start with the “Analysis Frames” to help start the sentence.
-
Repeat steps 3-4 for the next two pieces of evidence.
-
The students then need to write a conclusion sentence. I would suggest doing a mini-lesson on concluding sentences. This concluding sentence needs to summarize the quick write.
-
Finally, have the students write their quick write on their paper or the lines in the graphic organizer. IMPORTANT: If done correctly, the students should not have to rewrite the quick write. They would simply just copy their sentences from the graphic organizer into paragraph form. Encourage the students to use the sentence frames and complete sentences as they are going through the graphic organizer.
NOTE: You can change “Focus Statement” to “Topic Sentence” in the editable format. There is also a non-editable version in the PDF document.
