You are an efficient, engaging, and hard-working educator. The work that you are doing for your students is appreciated. Thank you for your dedication and the time you put in to ensure your students succeed.

Today’s podcast aims to provide you with listening and speaking activities that you can incorporate into your lessons. The goal is that they are simple activities that will improve your students’ listening and speaking skills.

  • Listen & Do
    • Listen and Do is a listening activity that works on auditory memory and students’ listening skills. To create this activity in your class, pick 9-12 pictures to put on a paper. Then write instructions for what you want the students to do to the pictures. For example, put a star above the horse. Put a box around the fish. Underline the chicken. You can increase the difficulty by adding more items in a sentence.
  • Listen & Repeat
    • Listen and Repeat is a simple activity that is exactly what the title says. You can create this activity by writing 4-5 word sentences. Students then listen and repeat the sentence with a partner. You can increase difficulty by adding more words to the sentence.
  • Spot the Mistake
    • In this fun activity, students will listen and identify the mistakes. You can make them into silly sentences and have the students correct them. Here is an example: The dog drove the car. The silly mistake is the dog cannot drive a car. You can have the students replace the word dog with man or students. Students love this activity, and you can have the students create their silly sentences with a mistake. They can then read them to a partner so that the partner can find the mistake.
  • Listen & Sequence
    • For the listen and sequence activity students will listen to a short story that includes photos. Afterward, they take picture cards to put them into the correct order.

One of the things that I have noticed this semester is the need for more social interactions with the students. That is why I wanted to be more intentional about the speaking activities that I am doing in the classroom. Here are some of the activities that I am incorporating in the classroom.

  • Conversation Starter Cards
    • Conversation Starter Cards are a simple tool you can create to get a conversation started with your students. You can have question cards that ask about their pets, siblings, favorite games, and so much more! As a scaffold, you can add sentence frames to help the students start the conversation.
  • Reader’s Theater
    • Reader’s Theater is an activity where students read aloud from a script about varying topics. Some reader’s theater includes props and costumes. Reader’s Theater can also help students build fluency, increase comprehension, and build confidence.
  • Picture Scenes & 5 W’s
    • This is another simple and engaging activity for students. In this speaking activity, students will look at a picture and answer questions about the photo with a partner. Model for the students how to encourage conversation and ask follow-up questions.
