Welcome, educators! Before we get started, I want to share with you the amazing resources I have available. To learn more and download some engaging resources go to myadventuresinesl.com/store.

This week’s episode aims to provide you with tips and strategies on how you can implement literacy stations in your classroom.

There are so many advantages to literacy stations in your classroom. Here are some examples of some of the advantages:

  1. Literacy stations decrease the amount of material and time required for set-up
  2. Literacy stations create opportunities for a diverse student population to have some responsibility for their learning environment
  3. Literacy stations free the instructor to help students with more difficult concepts.

There are many types of literacy stations that you can incorporate in your classroom. The five stations that I use throughout the year are listening, reading, vocabulary, writing, speaking, and stations that designate the students working with me during a specified time.

When setting up your stations here are some tips that I have found helpful.

  1. Plan out your station activities. In my classroom this looks like I have pre-planned stations so that I can simply have the ready when needed. For example, in the vocabulary center I have in my class students have options such as rainbow vocabulary and eight on a list. In those cases the stations are planned and all I have to do is swap out the vocabulary words.
  2. Pick 3 – 5 choices for each student to pick at each station. Having options available at the stations makes everything so much easier. This also empowers the student and provides different learning styles.
  3. Think about how you want your station’s setup: cart, folders, etc. This is crucial in the success of your stations. Mainly because you want everything to go smoothly.

Finding supplies for the stations is another task. I have had supplies funded through grants and looking for gently used items. Listen to this week’s podcast episode where I go into specifics on how you can stock up your learning stations.
