You are an effective and hard-working educator. The work that you are doing for your students is appreciated. Thank you for your dedication and the time you put in to ensure your students succeed.
In this week’s episode, I will share how you can create a Black History Month quilt that highlights influential African – Americans in history.
In this lesson, we will be creating a quilt which will be collaborative. Each student will be assigned or they can pick someone they would want to research to include in the Black History Quilt. I would suggest a theme to help structure the activity. For example, influential African-Americans in science and technology can be a theme for your quilt.
Now that you have an overview, let’s dive into how you can build background knowledge about this topic. Since this is a collaborative effort and there are different people students will be researching, your building background lesson will be based on your theme. In the lesson we did before creating the quilt, students heard read-alouds about influential African Americans. You can also show videos about some of the people being highlighted on the biography quilt.
Our mini-lesson this week will focus on editing. The students will be writing biography paragraphs about an influential African American. This will be the perfect opportunity to model for them how to edit their writing. I like to do this by using a writing rubric/checklist based on their writing level.
I have a FREE Writing & Rubric sample of this I will be sharing with everyone. The goal of this checklist is to help students improve their writing. During this mini-lesson on editing, model for the students how to use the rubric/checklist.
To do this activity, find passages related to the theme you chose that the students can edit using the checklist.
On the third day of the lesson, students will research the influential African-American they have chosen. I do have a Black History Month Bio Quilt available in my Teacher Pay Teacher store that I will also link.
Before the students start researching, set expectations with them about the project. Also curate a list of websites, books, and articles the students can do their research.
On the fourth day of the project, students will write their final draft of the quilt piece. They will also color their quilt pieces. Afterward, they will cut and paste their quilt pieces on bulletin board paper. I do have some examples of this available so you can visualize how this would look in your classroom.
The last day of the project is the student’s presentation. The students will introduce their piece of the quilt to the class.
