EP 128 What is Black History Month?

Welcome educators! Before we get started I want to share the engaging resources I have available to you. To learn more and download some engaging resources go to myadventuresinesl.com/store.

You are an amazing and hard-working educator. The work that you are doing for your students is appreciated. Thank you for your dedication and the time you put in to ensure your students succeed.

In today’s episode, I will share ideas and lessons for the first week of Black History Month.

To start this lesson students need to understand why February is Black History Month. This can be taught to the students by building background knowledge through videos and read-aloud. There are a lot of kids’ songs on YouTube to help the students better understand the history of Black History Month. There are also books available on GetEpic that can be read aloud to students during school hours.

After students build background knowledge, they can complete a gallery walk of what they learned. This is a simple activity where students write 2-3 facts they learned about a topic. They post their facts around the room so it is visible to other

students. Then, students walk around, read, and give feedback on the posts.

Day two will be our reading skill mini-lesson. The mini-lesson this week will be cause and effect. I have a Cause & Effect lesson that you can use in your lessons. It’s great because it provides an opportunity to practice and identify how to use cause and effect in reading.

Day three starts the close-read lesson of Black History Month. I will link the one I have available that is perfect for your class because it includes leveled passages, vocabulary activities, listening activities, and built-in scaffolds.

Day 4 of the lesson is the writing assignment. In the writing prompt students will write either a cause-and-effect paragraph or a cause-and-effect essay that identifies the causes of Black History Month and its effects. In addition, you will need some passages about Black History Month. This will help the students write about the causes and effects of Black History Month

The last day of this week’s lessons can be used as an opportunity to take students on a virtual field trip. There are many museums that your students can visit that celebrate Black History Month
The Momma Wanderlust shares 12 museums that you can visit virtually for Black History. While on these tours have students write down what they notice, what they wonder, and connections

they make while learning about Black History Month.

If you found value in today’s episode, go to myadventuresinesl.com/store for the detailed lesson plan about Black History Month which includes 2 full weeks of lesson plans and activities.

Also, I have a Cause and Effect lesson that compliments the Black History Month lesson.
