Today’s episode aims to provide you with lesson ideas for lessons about the Lunar New Year.
Day 1 Building Background:
The Chinese New Year will be celebrated on February 10th. Chinese New Year is a 15-day festival that begins with the new moon. Chinese New Year can also be called Lunar New Year. Start Day 1 of the lesson with a KWL chart. Have students complete what they want to know and what they want to learn about Chinese New Year.
After completing the KW chart, they will watch a video about the Lunar New Year. Twinkl Resources has a free video on YouTube titled “All About Chinese New Year for Kids” that you can show to
your students. To support newcomers in your class, I suggest having checkpoints in the video where you stop to ask questions.
After the students watch the video, read aloud a book about Chinese New Year to the students. There is a huge selection of GetEpic that you can use during school hours. At the end of class, have students complete what they learned on the KWL chart.
Day 2 Skill Focus Mini Lesson:
On Day 2 of this week’s lesson about Chinese New Year, the skill focus will be compare and contrast. This a perfect opportunity for the students to learn about how New Year’s is celebrated all over the world.
Students can then use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast. As a scaffold for newcomers, you can add visuals for them to compare and contrast the topics.
Day 3 Close Read:
Day three starts the close-read lesson of the Lunar New Year. To do this close-read lesson you will need a passage about Lunar New Year. Lunar New Year Close Read is perfect for your class because it includes leveled passages and built-in scaffolds.
Day 4 Writing Activity:
Day 4 of the lesson is the writing assignment. In the writing prompt students will write either a compare-and-contrast paragraph or a compare-and-contrast essay comparing Lunar New Year to a holiday the students celebrate.
Just as a note, if the students don’t celebrate holidays you can have them compare Lunar New Year to New Year’s Day and Eve celebrations around the world.
Day 5 Culminating Activity:
Day five our lesson will be a mini-project and craft. Students will create a dragon using their hand prints. After creating the dragon, they will write five interesting facts they learned about the Lunar New Year on the hand prints. Students will then assemble the dragon. This is a FREEBIE!
