EP 118 What I’m Teaching in October

Welcome educators! Before we start, I want to share an excellent free tool. It is “The Ultimate Guide to a Successful School Year”. In this guide, I walk you through how you can take those nervous jitters to have undeniable confidence throughout the school year. All because you started with these basic steps in the guide.

Download the guide at myadventuresinesl.com/ultimateguide.

We are going to start off today’s episode with your reflection question.

What skills do you plan on teaching this month?

Take a moment to reflect on this question. Think about this question and answer yourself honestly about where you stand.

We are all officially back in school and the year is in full swing. Most of us are past the beginning of the year activities, posters, and all-about-me activities. Now is the time when you are looking for plans for the upcoming school year.

In this week’s episode, I am going to share with you my October lesson plans week by week. The goal is to help you with your planning and keep you focused throughout the school year.

Let’s dive into what I’m teaching this month.

The theme for the month is Diwali. Diwali is an Indian holiday. During the first week of teaching, I plan to build background knowledge about this holiday through virtual field trips, videos and read-alouds about Diwali.

In the second week of the unit, I plan to do a close-read lesson. Before we start the Diwali close read, I will introduce the students to key vocabulary words. We will then read the article about Diwali and answer key questions.

In the third week of the Diwali unit, we will complete an informational paragraph about Diwali. We will end the third week of the unit with a five-senses activity.

The final week of the unit is our culminating project. This is where the students will complete a Diwali research project.

Think about the upcoming month and pinpoint any holidays and/or events you can do as a thematic unit. Use some of the ideas you heard in today’s episode to help you with the planning of the unit.
