We are going to start off today’s episode with your reflection question.
How are you engaging your students this spring semester?
Take a moment to reflect on this question. Think about this question and answer yourself honestly about where you stand.
A lot of us right now are in the middle of testing our students, and we are wondering how we can have engaging lessons for our students this semester. This can be difficult because the students are simply exhausted from testing and some may even be in a slump.
During this time of the year, I am mentally exhausted. Sometimes it can show in my lessons that I am planning for my students. Over the years, I have developed some stamina and ideas for engaging lessons to do with your students this spring. I want
you to learn from my mistakes and use my lessons to help make planning easier this spring semester.
Let’s dive into some spring lessons you can do with your language learners.
Women’s History Month – The month of March is Women’s History Month. This is a great opportunity to do biographies and research projects on influential women in history. To connect with the students in your class, consider having students do research projects on influential women from their home countries. I have two resources available that will help you with this project.
Virtual Field Trips – I love doing virtual field trips with students. You can have students do a webquest on the field, write about the field trip, and so much more! Students can go to places all
over the world. I have a virtual field trip available for you all to try out. I also love using the Nearpod feature for field trips.
Spring Observations Notebook – I came across this engaging activity while looking over our curriculum. This is an activity that can work for any grade level. Students record the observations and what they notice about the upcoming season. For example, the flowers change or even how the daylight is changing as the weather warms up. I can imagine you can do a speaking and writing activity about the observations. You can even include readings about the spring.
Plant Flipbook – Since spring is bringing in new plants, you can create a plant flipbook with your students. Read the students a book about plants or the plant life cycle. Then have them create a book about their favorite plant. You can use this opportunity for them to write and speak about their plant.
Take a moment to brainstorm ideas you would like to do with your students this spring semester. While you are brainstorming, keep in mind some of the interests of your students. What is your favorite spring activity to do with your students? Share your ideas in our Facebook community or in the comments below.
