Planning for Listening Growth
Welcome all-star teachers! As we jump into today’s topic, I would like you to reflect on your wins for the week. Every week I want to highlight a teacher’s win. A win can be big or small. I want you to celebrate your wins, and we want to celebrate with you! If you have a win you want to share, email me at millie@myadventuresinesl.com.
Have you ever been confused about how to support your language learners in the four domains? You genuinely want your students to grow, but you may be stuck on how to support them in listening activities.
I personally always thought that listening was the “easier” domain. In my mind I thought the students just listened and selected an answer. That was until I started working with my language learners and realized that this was an area that they needed a lot of work in on a daily basis. I realized this after practice assessments and daily tasks in listening demonstrated that the students were struggling. By struggling I mean they were not showing growth and in some cases showing regression. I was stuck on what to do so that they grow in listening.
The light bulb went off while I was observing another teacher. She was teaching and one of her formative assessments was a listening activity where the students completed a clause paragraph. In her lessons she embedded engaging and fun listening activities in her daily lessons. That’s when I realized I should be doing the exact same thing in my lessons.
The key to planning for listening growth is to plan for listening activities. Look at your daily lesson plans and be intentional about planning for listening activities. For example, can you include clause paragraphs, audio books with comprehension questions and various listening activities. Being intentional in how you plan for listening activities will lead to amazing growth from you and your language learners.
Think about an upcoming lesson. Review the lesson and add a listening activity to the lesson. I also have listening activities included in my close readings in my Teacher Pay Teacher store.
