Supporting ELLs During School Closures

Welcome educators!

Right now we are in the midst of a global pandemic. It appears overnight we are expected to pick up and teach our ELLs online.  The problem many of us face is that our ELLs have limited access to technology and the internet.

Thursday before our Spring Break our principal got on the intercom and announced we won’t be back until March 31st. I knew in my spirit that it was going to be longer so I rushed and started thinking of options. During this time, I had to console my students and show them how to log on to our low tech options.

This is how I plan to support my ELLs during the COVID (Coronavirus) Pandemic:

  1. I had our Bilingual Mentor reach out to parents to ensure they will be on board and were aware.
  2. Researching online platform that was easy – Zoom
  3. Upload to Youtube
  4. Doing Daily Writing Lessons with a mentor text from NewsELA/ Readworks
  5. FlipGrid – easy because it can be sent through Remind

There is an overwhelming amount of kindness out here for educators.

  1. If you are wanting to support your ELLs consider doing a zoom video. Zoom is offering an upgrade to their free plan for educators. Click Here to sign up for the upgrade.
  2. You can download and upload to a private channel on youtube
  3. Then share the video through Remind or the text messaging service you use.

Take this time to do some professional development. I am offering a FREE course you can take to refresh and renew your mindset. Sign-up here for the course.

If you have ways to support your ELLs during this time, share them below.
